Discover how the oceans are changing and what research is being done to maintain the oceans and the marine ecosystems. Instituto Cervantes and Fundación Iberdrola España are pleased to introduce the talks organized by Instituto Cervantes in Madrid, London, Brazil, New York, Tokyo, and Sydney with researchers from the European University of the Sea.
500 years ago, the oceans and seas became, thanks to the first round-the-world voyage by ship by Magellan and El Cano, highways of connection and communication, inaugurating a network of human, biological, agricultural, cultural, and economic intercontinental exchanges, which included the creation of trade networks between the various continents and their integration into a global economic system. This process, which all kinds of “worlds”, generated, paradoxically, the appearance of a single world and the possibility of conceiving fa universal history for the first time.
This single world of ours, shown as a sphere enveloped almost entirely by its waters, has developed as a one of a kind planet, this blue planet that, after 500 years, is experiencing in its oceanography the climatic emergency that is the protagonist of our present and whose solutions are a priority for our common future.
Oceans 500 years later is conceived as a series of conferences to reflect on the state of the oceans, in which local entities, experts, activists from the different countries where the selected centers are located can collaborate.
The aim is to contextualize the global emergency and awareness, to seek solutions, and to bet on the commitment of entities that develop projects or carry out examples of improvement for the situation of our waters. With the participation from Spain’s expert Fidel Echevarría, professor at the University of Cadiz and Delegate of the Rector for the European University of the Seas.
This European University is one of the European Alliances that conforms the pioneering project of the European Commission, it is specialized in sea sustainability and has achieved the highest scores in the European public call. Fidel will explain some of the projects and collaborations that exist on the subject of the oceans among different universities and will delve into the Malaspina scientific expedition that took place ten years ago as an interdisciplinary research project on the global impact on the oceans where marine biodiversity could be explored.
