Between 13 July and 26 August, the Plaza Mayor in Sigüenza will recreate the experience of contemplating fifty of the most relevant paintings in its collection with their real dimensions

Organised by the Museo Nacional del Prado and the Fundación Iberdrola España, with the collaboration of the Castilla-La Mancha Regional Government, the exhibition will tour eight cities in the region with the aim of promoting knowledge and cultural identity of the country’s historical heritage

“The Prado in Sigüenza”, organised by the Museo Nacional del Prado and the Iberdrola España Foundation, with the collaboration of the Castilla-La Mancha Regional Government, arrives in the municipality of Sigüenza, in Guadalajara.

Until 26 August, the exhibition will be opened this morning by Emiliano García Page, President of the Castile-La Mancha Regional Government; Pablo Bellido, President of the Castile-La Mancha Parliament; Miguel Falomir, Director of the Prado Museum; María Jesús Merino, Mayor of Sigüenza; Fernando García, President of the Fundación Iberdrola España; and Fernando Pérez Suescun, curator of the exhibition; will bring to the public fifty of the most important works in the collection of the national art gallery, through photographic reproductions, exhibited in the Plaza Mayor of Sigüenza, one of the most emblematic spaces of the city.

This exhibition aims to promote knowledge and dissemination of the collections and the cultural identity of the historical heritage attached to the museum, promoting the development of educational programs and cultural outreach activities. The exhibition also aims to recreate virtually the experience of visiting the museum, by being able to contemplate the paintings in their real dimensions.

The President of the Castilla-La Mancha Regional Government has had words of gratitude for “two of the institutions that most raise the country’s esteem: the Prado Museum and Iberdrola”. With regard to the Fundación Iberdrola España, he acknowledged its ongoing commitment to Castilla-La Mancha, in terms of lighting work and promoting energy, and offered the director of the national art gallery, Miguel Falomir, the Palacio del Infantado in Guadalajara “as a sub-home” of the Prado to house all the paintings that cannot be exhibited in its rooms. “This could be the best exhibition of the year”, added García Page, stressing that great works can be enjoyed in an open, safe and COVID-free environment.

For his part, the director of the Prado Museum stressed that “this project reflects the Museum’s firm desire to continue sharing its treasures with society, getting closer to the citizens and leaving the walls of the Villanueva building, thus becoming a vindication of art as a reference point and a place for reflection”, and Fernando García Sánchez, president of Fundación Iberdrola España, added: “this initiative is another example of Iberdrola’s firm commitment to bringing art closer to society”.

The open-air exhibition allows visitors to take a tour of the different schools that make up the art scene in the Prado’s permanent collection and to learn about the history of Spain, Europe and Western art in general from the great masters of painting. The Spanish, Italian, Flemish, French, German and Dutch schools will be present through their protagonists from the 12th century to the early 20th century.

It also has bilingual information panels on each of the works and panels, also bilingual, which provide information on the history of the museum and its collections.

The exhibition, which has already toured eight Spanish cities with great public success during the Prado Museum’s Bicentenary celebrations, this time begins a journey through seven cities in Castilla-La Mancha, as well as Sigüenza: Puertollano, Tomelloso, Ciudad Real, Toledo, Guadalajara, Cuenca, ending in March in Talavera de la Reina.

Fundación Iberdrola España, Protective member of the Prado Museum

Iberdrola, through its Foundation in Spain, focuses one of its main lines of activity on cultural development, focusing on the care and maintenance of cultural and artistic wealth.

In this way, the Foundation has been collaborating with the Prado Museum since 2010 by supporting the conservation and restoration programmes carried out by the art gallery, as well as by offering four grants a year to young restorers. In addition, it has wanted to join the Extraordinary Programme for the Commemoration of the Bicentenary of the Prado Museum and, specifically, the deployment of this travelling exhibition in Spain.

Since 2011, Fundación Iberdrola España has allocated a total of 13 million euros to the Art and Culture area, which focuses its resources mainly on the Restoration Programme, which supports restoration workshops in leading museums for the conservation of their pictorial and artistic heritage; and the Lighting Programme, which includes the design, execution and financing of artistic lighting projects in unique buildings and monuments.
